Trópico Latin Flavors Amsterdam: Tequeños, sweet plantain and bandeja paisa

Crisp cheese-filled tequeños, shrimp taquitos and a generous bandeja paisa near Mercatorplein.

Tequeños and maduro con queso

We started with two different ways of pairing cheese with something comforting. The tequeños were golden and crisp outside, opening into warm, stretchy cheese. The maduro con queso went softer and sweeter: tender plantain with melted cheese and fruity guava paste. The guava added another layer of sweetness alongside the rich cheese.

Shrimp taquitos

The shrimp taquitos brought several textures into one bite. Tender shrimp sat alongside creamy guacamole, while fried onions provided crunch. Fresh onion added a sharper edge and the sriracha mayo brought heat. After the sweet plantain, that combination gave us a more savory, gently spicy direction.

Bandeja paisa and steak

The bandeja paisa was a plate with a bit of everything: crispy pork belly, savory chorizo and ground beef, creamy beans, rice, a fried egg, arepa, avocado and sweet plantain. The beans and avocado softened the richer meat elements, while the plantain returned to that sweet-savory balance. We also shared steak with beans and plantains. Come hungry for this spread.
